Biographies

Hortense Mattice Gordon was a Canadian abstract painter born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1887. Before joining the Painters Eleven Hortense taught art at a Hamilton high school, studied and exhibited regularly. At age 67 Hortense was the eldest member to join the Painters Eleven. Professionally she was known as both an Abstract Expressionist painter and a technical teacher. She remained artistically active in the Hamilton and Toronto area for over 30 years.
